Diaphragm vacuum pumps are dry vacuum pumps. The connecting rod driven by the crankshaft moves the diaphragm tensioned between the upper cover and the housing. The space between the upper cover and the diaphragm forms a suction chamber. Diaphragm pumps require inlet and outlet valves to achieve the target gas displacement. A pressure control shutoff valve made of elastomer material constitutes this valve. Since the suction chamber is tightly sealed with the driver through each diaphragm, the pump medium will not be contaminated by oil, and the corrosive medium will not corrode the mechanical structure. The fixed space between the outlet valve and the suction chamber produces a limited compression ratio, which means that a single-stage pump can achieve an ultimate pressure of about 70 hPa. It is possible to achieve an ultimate pressure of 0.5 hPa with multi-stage pumps connected in series. Lower pressure cannot be achieved because there is no longer enough force to open the inlet valve. The principle of the diaphragm pump is particularly suitable for low pumping speeds of approximately 10 m3 · h-1.
